Sarah Styron
Associate Designer

LINCOLN, NE

My hometown is Lincoln, North Carolina. Okay, so its Lincoln, Nebraska but I did live in North Carolina for a year when I was 2, and that seems to carry more cachet with the folks around here.

I’ve recently learned I’m not the first Bozeller to have spent time detasseling corn, but hey, this is Nebraska it’s not like we’re growing grapefruit.

After a traumatic episode where I mixed up directions and found myself lost in the middle of a “Children of the Corn movie set” cornfield, I decided that farming was not in my blood. Unfortunately, my experience with corn has translated to a challenge with all plants, which I desperately try not to kill – as yet unsuccessfully.

DESIGNER – THE BUCKLE

My first foray into design was with The Buckle corporate office. It was a wonderful learning experience. I gained a genuine understanding of the importance of communication, as well as the fact that I would never live above the poverty level as long as I had access to a hefty discount on trendy clothing.

INTERN to ASSOCIATE DESIGNER – BOZELL

A few years ago, I heard about this remarkable ad agency that offered a Free Ad Day to members of the community and I thought “that’s a place I’d like to be.”

My first try at an internship as a green kid with a thin portfolio was a non-starter – but I persevered and got in the next year. From internship to Associate Designer – and in the process it was clear that being myself was key.

Now I sit at my desk, Hans Zimmer on my headphones (most likely Interstellar), and apply the hard lessons taught by my mentor, UNK’s Rick Schuessler. A tough and intimidating critic but a huge motivator for me. I’m sure his grueling but compassionate methods for helping me develop a “tough skin” will serve me well throughout my career as well as in all aspects of life.

Words to live by: Be kind and work hard.
