A Look Back on 2016 – An Intern Perspective

December 23rd, 2016

As 2016 comes to a close and the holiday spirit is in full effect, it’s the perfect time to take a moment and reflect on the past year.  As an intern at Bozell, this semester has truly opened my eyes to the fantastic opportunities we have to work with clients in our own backyard and across the United States.

In 2016, a lot of creative ideas and campaigns were born. Some funny, some heartwarming, some downright clever. Here are a few of our favorites:

College of Saint Mary
College of Saint Mary has always been a college founded on the belief that education should be accessible and affordable for all women. So while other colleges and universities continued to increase tuition, they decide to drop theirs by 33 percent. (Can you say #AgainstTheGrain?) We came up with a campaign that not only represented the strength behind the college, but also featured the strong, capable women who make up the student body.

This was easily one of the most impactful campaigns of 2016, and will be proudly remember for years to come. Tim Young, creative director, can attest to that. He remembers the Bozell team buzzing with excitement as they walked away from the very first meeting with College of Saint Mary

“It’s no surprise to me that this campaign is the favorite of the year,” Young said. “For everyone involved, the heart and soul that College of Saint Mary put into the tuition reduction drove the entirety of the campaign.”

Alex Maltese, senior account executive on the project, believes that an important precedent was set with the campaign.

“Great work is only achievable with great partners. The College of Saint Mary team truly believed that what they were setting out to do was the right thing,” Maltese said. “I believe we truly bettered the lives of students and with any luck, we influenced a trend for more affordable tuition everywhere.”

First National Bank
Our longtime client, First National Bank, continued their “Unforgettable Firsts” campaign through 2016, touching the hearts of many by putting customers at the forefront, showing how we are all connected by our human experiences.

A highlight from “Unforgettable Firsts” was the Habitat for Humanity Global Village Trip, where 12 people – six customers and six employees – traveled to Sofia, Bulgaria, to help build homes and create a renewed sense of community. The passion and volunteer spirit of these participants touched so many lives, including our own Bozell team members.

Free Ad Day
Last but certainly not least, we can’t fail to mention Bozell’s Free Ad Day, the first-of-its kind, community give-back event that celebrated our 95th anniversary. This day was momentous for many reasons, but perhaps most for helping out more than 111 people, nonprofits, and organizations in our community. We could relive this day forever, and so can you. Check out our video here.

Cheers to 2017
As the new year is quickly approaching, we Bozellers find ourselves feeling especially thankful for all the opportunities we’ve had to work with the businesses in our community. We’re wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year, from our family to yours! We can’t wait to see what the next year brings.
